Description

Deconstructing and Demystifying Psychotropic Medications
Patients taking psychotropic medications ARE NOT exclusive to psychiatric settings. These clients are seen in emergency departments, medical/surgical units, CICU, MICU, and practically all inpatient areas. In long-term care facilities, older adults are being prescribed psychotropics for mood and to control aggression. Frequently, these patients take more than one medication and polypharmacy is the rule rather than exception. Due to numerous and potentially severe side effects it can be overwhelming to learn everything you need to know. Maintaining competencies for psychotropics is challenging even to experienced professionals! Problems such as Extrapyramidal Symptoms (EPS), Tardive Dyskinesia (TD), Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome (NMS), cardiovascular (CV) effects, and Metabolic Syndrome are at the forefront of today's practice and legal liability issues. Where do you begin?

Whether you are a seasoned psychiatric nurse/clinician or your practice is outside the area of psychiatry, you will find the updated information in this seminar valuable. Cathy A. Weitzel, MSN, ARNP, BC, will "deconstruct," or separate, the concepts of psychotropic medications into parts that make them understandable and easier to grasp. Discover indications/side effects of newer SSRI/SNRI antidepressants, antipsychotics used to treat thought disorders, and mood stabilizers used to treat Bipolar Disorder. Required lab work for mood stabilizers, lithium, and various antipsychotics will be discussed. You will learn how to recognize EPS and TD associated with antipsychotics, along with clinical assessment tools and available treatments. QTc prolongation, life-threatening "syndromes," and legal liability issues will be addressed.
