Description

This session will focus on the evidence supporting the identification and treatment of active and latent myofascial trigger points. Current and past research associated with the topic will be explored.  Instrument-assisted soft tissue techniques, dry needling, and myofascial release as treatment will also be discussed. Furthermore, palpation skills will be addressed including the use of pincer and flat palpation approaches.

- Introduction
- Brief history and role of trigger points
- Research and evidence for trigger points in chronic pain conditions
- Definition and discussion of latent and active trigger points
- Association of trigger points to painful conditions
- Treatment of active versus latent trigger points
- Compare and contrasting of flat and pincer palpation
- Muscles that tend to be palpated through these techniques
- Discussion of clinical reasoning approaches
- What drives the use of certain interventions for the treatment of trigger points
- How does trigger point treatment fit into the treatment plan

Derek Clewley, PT, PhD.c, DPT, OCS, FAAOMPT, graduated from the University of Montana in 2002 with a Master’s Degree in Physical Therapy and later obtained his Doctor of Physical Therapy degree through Shenandoah University. In 2006 he achieved board certification as an orthopaedic clinical specialist. He is an active member of the American Physical Therapy Association. Dr. Clewley graduated from Evidence In Motion’s manual therapy fellowship program in 2010, part of the initial fellowship cohort, and is a Fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Manual Physical Therapy. Currently, he is enrolled at Rocky Mountain University of Health Professions and is a PhD candidate in the orthopaedic and sports sciences. His primary research interests are trigger point dry needling and manual physical therapy. Dr. Clewley is the Director of Residency Programs for BenchMark Physical Therapy and serves as faculty for Evidence In Motion’s residency, fellowship, and tDPT program.  He is also clinical faculty with Emory University and Mercer University.  Dr. Clewley has presented at numerous state and national conferences and has been published in peer reviewed journals.
