Description

Returning home is one of the most important discharge goals for today’s seniors. For rehabilitation therapists, home health can be rewarding and challenging with endless functional possibilities but limited clinical resources. This creative one-day course presents fresh, exciting ideas to help patients achieve their functional goals using practical interventions and minimal resources.

Join Susan Blair, one of only two Occupational Therapists who is dually credited by the AOTA Board in physical rehabilitation and in gerontology, as she presents her unique approach to creating an optimal therapeutic environment in today’s geriatric home setting. Help baby boomers return to the independent lifestyles they seek by properly assessing comorbidities and by incorporating patient-centered goals and priorities. At the same time, you will learn to create a functional intervention plan for geriatric patients by using everyday items to address specific therapeutic goals. This course is a must-have for all rehab professionals who want to enhance their skills.

Objectives:

  • Identify current trends in aging population statistics, lifestyle choices, patient goals, and utilization of rehabilitation services for older people
  • Examine cost effective geriatric assessment tools applicable to home health/SNF/ALF patients
  • Utilize successful therapeutic interventions to provide geriatric patients with meaningful and purposeful activities which are age and gender appropriate
  • Construct creative and functional therapeutic tools from inexpensive, practical items found in the home
  • Gain understanding of geriatric comorbidities such as diabetes, COPD, CHF, and depression, and their implications for developing frailty in community dwellers
  • Determine the use of  outcome measures and develop education resources using patient-centered goals with geriatric clients
