Description

Embed Evidence-Based Interventions in Fun, Everyday Activities

Play therapy is a highly effective vehicle for promoting cognitive, physical, social-emotional, and language development. While it continues to evolve at breakneck pace alongside advances in technology, its core concepts remain simple, adaptable, and budget-friendly for parents and clinicians alike. Best of all, play therapy feels natural for clients, allowing you to embed evidence-based interventions in everyday activities. This program will show you how to incorporate play into a child and family’s daily routine, as well as enhance parental engagement in the process and improve compliance with therapy outside of sessions.

In this recording, we’ll explore the essential “how-to” details of play therapy, walking through individual and group sessions and connecting each step with supporting research and child development theory, from room setup and activity/toy selection to your role as a coach and facilitator. Discover effective ways to individualize approaches according to client and family needs, such as when working with clients who demonstrate challenging behaviors or have sensory processing/communication deficits. We’ll also discuss how to provide play therapy with the same level of structure and accountability found in traditional skill-based training, showing you how to operationalize general tasks that are often poorly defined, from conducting parent consultations to measuring and documenting progress for parents and third-party payers. Case studies throughout the seminar offer relevant practice examples, illustrating how to carry out effective sessions while responding to a range of variables and challenges.

By the end, you’ll come away with a toolbox filled with ready-to-use techniques that can be immediately implemented in your work with children and clients of all ages. Whether you’re searching for guidance on how to incorporate play therapy into your practice or a refresher on the latest methods and techniques, this course is designed for you.

MA, CCC/SLP

Susan Hamre, MA, CCC/SLP, is an ASHA-certified speech/language pathologist with over 40 years of clinical, teaching, and research experience, specializing in autism interventions within home, school, hospital, and community settings. Since earning her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees at Northern Michigan University, she has owned and managed a private practice in Santa Fe for more than 25 years, serving individuals from infancy to adulthood, with an emphasis on developmental disabilities, ASD, and various other challenging conditions.

Additionally, Ms. Hamre is the director of the Autism Training Center at Giant Steps (a therapeutic day school for individuals with ASD) near Chicago, Illinois. She is a frequently requested speaker who has provided numerous continuing education trainings across the country on ASD. In her spare time, she has made five Operation Smile mission trips – four to the Philippines and one to Africa. While those trips were medical in nature (cleft lip and palate), on every one of those trips, Ms. Hamre helped identify the existence of probable autism, steered families in the right direction, and supported medical personnel in discovering how best to work with this unique population. Those situations underscore her belief that with trained eyes, the unique set of characteristics that cloak ASD can be not only spotted at a very young age, but worked with successfully in all sorts of environments – even when the same language is not being spoken.
