Description

Examine the unique challenges faced by mental health professionals and the juvenile justice system when responding to sexual offenses among juveniles
Sexual offending among juveniles is a unique problem requiring a unique response from mental health professionals, law enforcement, and the justice system. When both the perpetrator and the victim of a sex crime are children, understanding the dynamic of abuse is especially challenging. Factors associated with juvenile sex offending differ from those associated with adult offending and involve a complex interaction of biological, developmental, social, familial, and psychological variables., In just two hours, Dr. Sarah Shelton addresses the research, theories, clinical practice standards, and legal-ethical considerations of evaluating and treating juvenile sex offenders. Join Dr. Shelton as she highlights a clinical case example, discusses societal attitudes towards juvenile sex offending, and explores controversies surrounding the mental health and juvenile justice systems' response to this problem.
